Couldn't wait

Yesterday I had a really great shoot with my friend Julia who is as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. This is just an example portrait which is still in need of tweaking, but which nevertheless I couldn't wait to share with you.

The lighting for the initial portraits we took was inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Johannes Vermeer. Among others, I stole their use of the black background, soft lighting and colour. But what seemed as a simple act of copying to take some cool portraits led me to discover the key to understanding how these elements came together to form complex and emotionally charged portraits. It might just be the first time I really recognized what made their work powerful and so significant despite the passage of time.

We took many portraits with this set-up, but this one without any props or additional gestures with Julia looking straight into the camera pulls me in like no other we shot that day.

I will post more pictures soon.
